Sumo Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar

I was in Hoover yesterday and was wanting Japanese food. Usually I get Stix in fultondale but the location in Hoover was closed. That is what lead me to find Sumo’s. Honestly, I think their food was better anyways! I ordered three hibachi chicken dinners with fried rice, one without onions, all to go. They got the order correct and weren’t difficult about the no onion order (which is rare to find)! The food was ready fast and prepared well to travel with. I would definitely go back again! It was a great dinner for me and my family!

Tonight ended AMAZING (thankfully) for my sisters birthday thank you to this amazing staff here at Sumo’s. Special shout-out to, Rex, who went above and beyond! Our big family can’t wait for our next visit. Really, when you find good people/ service/ food - brag on them. Keep them highlighted. Definitely give these guys a shot. (We were on the hibachi side)

The food and service today was awful. Went today 09-JAN-2024 for lunch and the service and quality of food was poor. The customer services was awful and they do not “appear” to care about the customers!. We waited for more than 20 mins to be seated and another 20 -25 mins for the grill to heat and for the food to be prepared, the veggies were very salty and the chicken and rice was not good. So disappointed with SUMO and not sure I will ever come back!

After 10+ visits mostly due to proximity, I have decided to go elsewhere with my family. The positive is good quality food. What they tend to forget is hibachi, is much more than the taste of the food. I can summarize my disappointment as follows: 1. Unenthusiastic chef. My kids clamor for fun at hibachi, but one of the two main chefs there hardly seems to care - worse, he Is very cynical and dry. 2. They will not accommodate you no matter how frequently you go, or with how big a group. It is very rigid, and they hardly even seem to care if you are disappointed. I once celebrated a birthday party with 20 people, and all they requested was to accommodate us at adjacent tables. They said we could only have tables as they become available. We waited for over an hour with 10 kids in the group. If you’re just there for the food, maybe not a bad place to go. If you want a true hibachi experience, go elsewhere. I have tried Kobe 280 just once and loved their hospitality. This is a 15 minute extra right and I would gladly take it any day.
